What Annual Budget Are We Looking At?

Let us look at the details of a member’s annual budget.[1] Freemasonry is not very costly, especially if you compare it to the practice of golf or racing cars. It is, however, a more costly activity than jogging or meditation.

As we have already mentioned, there is, to begin with, the cost of Initiation, generally about £450/$585. [2]. This includes the price of the Apprentice’s white apron and gloves. Then each year, you need to pay the annual membership fee or “capitation”. Depending on the Lodge, it is paid either in September after the summer vacation or in January. It depends on the financial organisation of your Lodge and your Obedience. The price varies from £90-£400/$117-$527. If you are asked to pay £600/$700 per year, take to your heels immediately, there is a problem because that is far too expensive. It is possible, if your salary is not very high, to pay in several instalments. In that case, you only have to ask. It is very rare for the request to be refused.

These annual expenses are obligatory. In the case of an unjustified refusal to pay on your part, the Master Masons of the Lodge can vote your revocation for non-payment. According to the agreements that your Obedience has signed with others, this could cause you harm. We have been confronted with the case of a Brother who was expelled from a Grand Lodge for non-payment of dues. When he subsequently wished to join another Obedience, the two Grand Secretariats shared their information on him and the second Lodge was obliged to turn him down because of the friendship treaty between the two Obediences. Several years afterwards, the file of this brother still mentioned his unpaid dues.
